New braunfels Police department
Over the four months at the police department, I have learned a lot of what goes on that civilians are not aware of. The amount of workload that is given to a certain amount of detectives and advocates but still manage to help out almost every victim possible. I've learned on how to communicate with a victim of a domestic violence, sexual assault, and even human trafficking. Through great leadership I have learned the classifications of the law and what distinguishes a crime from being classified a felony or a misdemeanor. I have helped out victims fill out protective orders and crime victim's compensation application and explained to them the next steps that follow. In having the ability to speak Spanish I have been able to help Spanish speaking victims in filling out these forms out and provided them with guidance on the next steps that will follow. Some of the great skills that I have learned is knowing that not every case will be the same and that every victim will have a completely different form of grieving process. I can't enforce how much this agency has helped grow my knowledge about tragic life events and how to help those victims in need.
